Riverdale, NY (February 16, 2005)- A 17-4 Manhattan run to close out the first half blew open a tight game, and the Jaspers never looked back, defeating Loyola, 77-61, tonight at Draddy Gym. The win was the third straight for Manhattan, which improves to 13-11 overall, 8-8 in MAAC play. Freshman
CJ Anderson led all scorers with a game-high 22 points.
The Jaspers scored the opening bucket of the game and never trailed before, with the lead at four, 23-19, with 5:29 to play in the first half, Manhattan held the Greyhounds to just one basket the rest of the half, using a 17-4 run, capped by consecutive three pointers from
Peter Mulligan in the half's final minute, to go into the half leading by 17, 40-23.
Manhattan put the game out of reach with a 20-6 run to open the second half, opening up the Jaspers' largest lead, 33 points, capped by two Mulligan free throws to make the score 60-29 with 13:21 remaining. Loyola was not able to get the lead under 19 points until the final minutes, getting no closer than the final margin of 16 points.
Anderson added six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks to his game-high 22 points, and was joined in double figures by Mulligan (17 points, season-high five assists), and
Arturo Dubois, who tallied 17 points, a team-high seven rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.
Jason Wingate added seven points and five helpers, as Manhattan handed out 19 assists, tallied 12 steals, and blocked six shots.
Sean Corrigan paced Loyola with 14 points, while Josko Alujevic added 12 points, and Freddie Stanback pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
Manhattan gets back in action on Saturday, February 19, when the Jaspers travel to Fairfax, VA to take on George Washington in the team's final non-conference game. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
