Riverdale, N.Y. (December 30, 2005)- CJ Anderson tallied game-high with 24 point, 16 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks, recording his third consecutive double-double as Manhattan extended its winning streak to six, upending St. Francis-N.Y., 89-78, tonight at Draddy Gym. With the win, the Jaspers improve to 6-4, while the Terriers fall to 3-7.
St. Francis led, 12-7, its largest lead of the night, 5:20 into the game before Manhattan used a 14-0 run to take a 21-12 lead with 10:58 remaining in the opening stanza. The Terriers countered with a 6-0 run of their own to pull within three, 21-18, with 8:01 left in the half, but would get no closer, as Manhattan quickly extended the lead back to nine and would not let the Terriers to get any closer than eight the rest of the half. Anderson's driving lay-up with less than 10 seconds left in the first half sent the Jaspers into the locker room with a 10 point, 41-31, lead.
Manhattan scored the first five points of the second half to push the lead to 15, 46-31, with 18:16 left in the game. St. Francis was able to whittle its deficit down to seven, 51-44, following a Jamaal Womack three pointer, but the Jaspers again were able to push the lead back to double-digits, pushing their advantage to as many as 16, 73-57, with 6:57 remaining.
The Terriers hit some late threes to close to within five, 83-78, with just under a minute left, but Jason Wingate iced the game at the line, connecting on all six of his attempts from the charity stripe in the final minute of play.
Arturo Dubois netted a career-high 19 points, adding six boards, while Wingate scored 17 points, including 11-12 from the line. Jeff Xavier was the fourth Jasper in double-figures, pouring in 17 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor.
Allan Sheppard paced the Terriers with 18 points.
Manhattan will celebrate the New Year before returning to action on Friday, January 6, traveling to New Rochelle, N.Y. to battle local and MAAC rival Iona at 7:00 p.m. The game, which will be televised on ESPNU, will kick off the MAAC television schedule.
