Wichita, KS (January 3, 2005) - Senior
Peter Mulligan scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to propel Manhattan to a 64-59 win over previously unbeaten Wichita State tonight at the Charles Koch Arena on the Wichita State campus. The Jaspers improve to 5-4, while the Shockers fall to 9-1.
Wichita State jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead over the first 2:22 of the game, before Manhattan responded with an 8-3 run to pull within three, 11-8, with 12:39 before the break. However, the Shockers pushed the lead back to eight and led by seven, 26-19, with 4:40 remaining before the half before Manhattan used a 13-3 run to take a three point lead, 32-29, with 53 ticks left and looked to take the lead into the break, but Sean Oggiri recovered a tipped ball at half court and just beat the halftime buzzer to send the teams into the lockerooms knotted at 32-32.
After the teams each went 1-2 from the line to open the second half, Wichita State used a 10-3 run to open up a seven point lead, 43-36, 4:57 into the second stanza. Mulligan then scored 11 of the game's next 15 points as the Jaspers used a 12-2 run to take a three point lead, 48-45, with 10:58 left in the game. The Shockers regained the lead and led by five, 57-52, with 3:06 remaining, but the Jaspers would not be denied the upset and allowed Wichita State just two points the rest of the way, scoring 12 of the game's final 14 points to emerge with the hard fought 64-59 road win.
