Riverdale, NY (January 27, 2005)- After Manhattan had taken a 48-46 lead with 49 seconds left to play, Rider's Becky Hower converted a three-point play with 11 seconds left, as the Broncs came from behind to defeat Manhattan tonight, 49-48 at Draddy Gymnasium.
Manhattan held a 42-33 lead with six minutes left on a three-pointer by sophomore
Kristen Tracey. However, Rider held Manhattan to only two field goals down the stretch. During the run, Kara Borel scored eight of her game-high 18 points to get Rider back in the game. Rider tied the game at 46 with 1:44 remaining, but
Serra Sangar's jumper game Manhattan a 48-46 advantage in the final minute, setting up Hower's heroics in the waning seconds.
The Lady Jaspers took a 7-5 lead early in the first half and held the lead until Rider went ahead 49-48 in the final minute. Manhattan held the Broncs to 27.3% shooting in the first half, and forced seventeen Rider turnovers.
Manhattan also controlled the backboards, outrebounding Rider 36-22, including 13-3 on the offensive glass.
Sangar and freshman
Caitlin Flood each scored nine points to lead a balanced Manhattan attack, while fellow freshman
Aubrie Dellinger had seven points and seven rebounds for the Lady Jaspers.
Manhattan will return to the court on Sunday, January 30, in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team. The women's basketball team will take on Siena at 2:00 p.m., while the men's team will follow with a matchup against Fairfield scheduled to tip-off at 4:00 p.m. Sunday's game is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Day, sponsored by the MAAC and the Young Survivors Coalition, one in a series of 10 MAAC games designed to promote breast cancer awareness among young women.
