WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO NIAGARA, 71-41

Riverdale, NY (February 1, 2004) - In their second straight doubleheader with the men's team, the Lady Jaspers fell to MAAC foe Niagara, 71-41. With the loss, the Lady Jaspers dropped their fourth straight game, and fall to 8-11 overall and 4-6 in the MAAC. Freshman Michelle Bernal-Silva recorded a career-high 15 points and added nine rebounds in the loss.

The Lady Jaspers trailed for most of the first half, but with a Donnette Reed layup, Manhattan came within one at the 12:45 mark, marking the closest the Lady Jaspers would get for the remainder of the game. Colleen Toetz tallied 18 first half points in 19 minutes of play for the Purple Eagles.

Niagara jumped out to a 7-0 run in the beginning of the second half, expanding their lead to 48-21. Manhattan had 15 turnovers in the half versus Niagara's seven. With a Shaunna Ambrose jumper, Niagara recorded its largest lead of the game, 67-36 at the 3:46 mark. Bernal-Silva recorded 12 second half points despite the loss.

Freshman Teelah Grimes tallied a career-high seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Colleen Toetz tallied 22 points, and Ann Mimm added 19 points for the Purple Eagles, who improved to 12-7 overall and 6-4 in the MAAC.

Next up for the Lady Jaspers is a trip to Buffalo, NY for two games. First, they will face Canisius on Friday, February 6 at 7 pm and then Niagara on Sunday, February 8 at 1 pm.
