Serra Sangar (Istanbul, Turkey/Colby JC) scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half to lead the Lady Jaspers to their third straight victory, an 83-68 win over Fairfield Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The Lady Jaspers (4-1) are now 2-0 in the MAAC for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
Manhattan held the lead throughout much of the first half, but the Stags battled back to take a 28-27 lead on a jumper by Clare Faurote with 3:35 left in the half. The lead went back and forth and eventually the two teams ended the first half tied at 33. Senior
Donnette Reed (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) led the Lady Jaspers with nine points in the first half, and pulled down five rebounds during the stanza. Reed finished the game with 20 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Candice Lindsay and Cathy Dash each scored nine points to lead the Stags during the first half.
With the game tied at 38 early in the second half, the Lady Jaspers went on a 12-5 run, sparked by eight points by Sangar during the stretch. Manhattan extended its lead to 58-47 with 9:05 left on two free throws by freshman
Aubrie Dellinger (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest), who finished with a career-high 11 points. The Stags would fight back, cutting the Manhattan lead to seven (71-64) on a jumper by Janelle McManus with 3:40 remaining. However, the Lady Jaspers responded with a 10-2 run, which began when sophomore
Kristen Tracey (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) made a three-pointer from the top of the key and Reed subsequently stole the inbounds pass and put in a layup, ultimately sealing the victory for Manhattan.
The Lady J's shot at least 50% from the field (29-58) for the game for the second game in a row, while their defense forced Fairfield to shoot 35.4% for the game. Lindsay scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Stags (2-4, 1-1), while McManus chipped in with 15 points, to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.
The Lady Jaspers return to action on Sunday, December 12, when they will host Dartmouth at Draddy Gymnasium to kick off a three-game homestand. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
