Peter Mulligan netted a career-high tying 31 points and received the Mike Cohen Award as the MVP of the Battle of the Bronx as the Jaspers downed local rival Fordham, 76-60, tonight at Rose Hill Gym on the Fordham campus. The win is Manhattan's fourth straight win over the Rams, and runs the Jaspers' record to 3-0 on the season.
Fordham (1-2) built an early, 6-2, lead over the first two minutes of the game before Manhattan responded with a extended, 26-8, run over the next 11 minutes to race out to a 28-14 lead with 7:30 remaining in the first half. Mulligan poured in 15 points and
Mike Konovelchick added three trifectas during the run. Fordham answered with a 15-8 run to close out the half, trimming the defict in half to go into the break down seven, 36-29.
Manhattan shot 45.2% (13-24) from the field in the opening stanza, including 62.5% (5-8) from behind the arc.
In the second half, the freshmen duo of
Arturo Dubois and
CJ Anderson came alive, with Dubois scoring all 14 of his points and Anderson scoring 13 and handing out seven assists over the second 20 minutes as Manhattan extended its lead from seven to 20 points over the first 10:41 of the second half. The lead would grow as large as 21 after an Anderson breakaway dunk with 3:57 to play and would never dip below the final margin of 16.
Mulligan's 31 points matches his career-high and is the most he has scored in a Manhattan uniform. Dubios (14 points in 12 minutes), Anderson (16 points, team-high six rebounds, and seven assists), and Konovelchick (11 points) all tallied in double figures.
Jason Wingate added four points and six assists as the Jaspers shot 70.4% (19-27) in the second half and 62.7% (32-51) for the game. The Jaspers recorded 20 assists on their 31 baskets.
Jermaine Anderson led four Rams in double figures with 19 points. Bryant Dunston and Marcus Stout each contributed 13 points, while Mushon Ya'akosi added 10 points. Ya'akosi and Dunston each pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
Manhattan returns to action on Tuesday, November 30, when the Jaspers open up their MAAC title defense at the Arena at Harbor Yard, where the Jaspers will take on Fairfield at 7:30 p.m.
