Syracuse, NY (November 24, 2004)- Syracuse held the Lady Jaspers to 28.3% shooting from the field to take a 61-45 victory this afternoon at Manley Field House. Chineze Nwagbo finished with 17 points to lead the Orange, while Syracuse native Donnette Reed (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) led Manhattan with 14 points.
Syracuse used a 10-0 run late in the first half to open up a 32-17 lead over the Lady Jaspers, sparked by two treys from Rochelle Coleman. However, Manhattan bounced back and went on an 8-2 run, including six free throws without a miss during that stretch. Reed led Manhattan with 10 points during the half, while fellow senior Serra Sangar (Istanbul, Turkey/Colby JC) had six points. Coleman scored all nine of her points during the first stanza for the Orange, while Nwagbo chipped in with seven of her own. Manhattan shot 30.8% in the half, while the Orange shot 44.8%, including four three-pointers without a miss.
Both teams started out the second half scoreless until Sangar hit a baseline jumper with 15:03 remaining to bring Manhattan to wtihin nine points. The Orange responded with their first basket of the half at 14:01, on a layup by Jill Norton. Both teams remained cold and traded baskets for the most of the second half. Manhattan closed to within 12 at 46-34, but Syracuse went on a 7-0 run before Manhattan hit three consecutive treys to close within 12 points again, but that was as close as the Lady J's would get.
Sangar finished the game with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Jaspers (1-1), while Lauren Kohn was perfect from the field (4-4, including 2-2 from beyond the arc) for Syracuse (3-0).
The Lady Jaspers will return to action on Sunday, November 28, when they will face off against Bucknell in their home opener. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
