Donnette Reed (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) scored 21 points to lead five Lady Jaspers in double figures tonight in a win over the New York Gazelles, 83-49. Tonight's game was the only exhibition affair for the Lady Jaspers before their regular season opener next Friday at Fordham.
Manhattan shot 53% from the field in the first half and 5-8 from beyond the arc to jump out to a 50-30 lead at halftime. The Lady Jaspers held a 15-11 lead at the 12:04 mark, but freshman
Gabrielle Cottrell (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect) nailed four three-pointers over a 3:13 span to spark Manhattan on a 19-2 run that widened the Manhattan lead to 34-13. Reed scored 11 of her 21 points in the first half, while dishing out six assists with only one turnover. Meanwhile, junior guard
Lupe Godinez (Glendale, AZ/Independence/Phoenix College) went 3-3 from the field, and scored nine points during the half.
The Gazelles played the Lady Jaspers evenly throughout much of the second half, until the Lady Jaspers again went on a huge run. A layup from senior
Serra Sangar (Istanbul, Turkey/Colby JC) with 1:02 remaining in the game capped a 17-1 run, giving Manhattan an 82-46 lead.
Cottrell (12 points), Sangar (11 points and 10 rebounds) and Godinez (11) joined Reed and freshman
Joann Nwafili, (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) who scored 11 points, as the five Lady Jaspers in double figures.
Manhattan outrebounded the Gazelles 43-28 and shot 16-20 (80%) from the foul line, while holding the Gazelles to 31.4% shooting during the game.
The Lady Jaspers will kick off the 2004-05 regular season next Friday, November 19, on the road against crosstown rival Fordham. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
