Riverdale, NY - (January 30, 2004) In the first game of the doubleheader with the men's team, the Lady Jaspers dropped their third straight game, falling to Canisius at Draddy Gym, 54-50. Junior
Donnette Reed posted a season high 18 points along with four steals in the loss. The Lady Jaspers drop to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
Despite five lead changes during the first stanza, the Lady Jaspers managed to take a four point lead into the half, 31-27. Manhattan finished the half on a 5-0 run, capped by a
Serra Sangar three-pointer with time expiring. For the Golden Griffs, Jenel Stevens tallied 15 first half points.
With an 8-2 run starting at the 17:57 mark in the second half, the Lady Jaspers expanded their lead to 39-32. Manhattan held the lead for the entire game until Canisius went on 6-0 run, capped by a Megan Lyte layup with eleven seconds left, giving the Golden Griffs the 52-50 edge. Manhattan had one last chance but the Lady Jaspers turned over the ball, and the Golden Griffs sunk two free throws with four seconds left to seal the victory.
For Canisius (10-8, 5-4 MAAC), Jenel Stevens led the way, recording a game high 23 points and 15 rebounds.
Senior
Rosalee Mason joined Reed in double figures with 10 points while also recording nine rebounds.
The Lady Jaspers will play their second straight doubleheader with the men's team on Sunday February 1 at 1 pm, against MAAC foe Niagara.
