Riverdale, NY (November 2, 2003)- Marist's Anthony Graci scored the game-winning goal and assisted on two other as the Red Foxes defeated the Manhattan College Jaspers, 3-1, today at Gaelic Park in the MAAC regular season finale for both teams. Manhattan falls to 4-11-2, 3-4-2 MAAC, while Marist improves to 10-5-1, 5-4-0 MAAC.
The Red Foxes opened the scoring at the 23:16 mark. Graci played the ball to Kyle Nunes in the corner, who crossed the ball to the head of Benjamin Castor. Castor put the ball to the near post to give Marist the early, 1-0 lead. Marist would extend its lead to 2-0 at the 41:29 mark, as Graci took the ball on a breakaway, and, after Jasper goalkeeper
Collin Leaver stopped his initial shot, put in his own rebound. The Red Foxes out shot Manhattan 6-2 in the first half, and went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The Jaspers picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, moving
Robert Tedesco to the front line in order to gain more offense. The move worked out, as
Tom Maguire put a long lead pass to Tedesco in the box at the 83:24 mark, and Tedesco one touched the ball past Red Fox goalkeeper Michael Danyo to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
Just under four minutes later, Manhattan turned the ball over in its defensive half, and Marist capitalized, as Keith Detelj received a pass from Graci in the penalty area, and one timed the ball past Leaver for an insurance goal.
Leaver made seven saves in net for the Jaspers, who were out shot 16-5. Danyo stopped two shots for Marist.
Manhattan will return to action when the Jaspers compete at the MAAC Championships in Lake Buena Vista, FL from November 5-9. Seedings and start times have not been determined at this time.
