New Rochelle, NY (October 5, 2003)- The Iona College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Manhattan in a MAAC soccer match-up at Mazzella Field this afternoon. The Gaels fall to an even 5-5-2 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC. Manhattan picks up its second win and is 2-7 overall and 1-1 in MAAC play.
Manhattan got on the scoreboard first in the game as senior Antonio Treglia (Brookville, NY) tallied his first goal of the season at the 38:40 mark. Treglia took a pass from Justin Shultz (Sussex, NJ) and was able to get behind the defense to beat Iona goalkeeper Patrick McAllen (Washingtonville, NY) in a one-on-one situation.
David Kinneman (Lansdale, PA) netted his second goal in as many games and fourth on the season to tie the score in the 67th minute. Kinneman one-timed a nice feed from junior Sheu Fortunato (Coquitlan, BC) past Jasper keeper Collin Leaver (Encinitas, CA).
The Jaspers took the lead for good with less than 10 minutes to play as sophomore Kevin Martin (Bournemouth, England) headed a throw-in from Eugene Reynolds (Avon, NJ) at the 82:12 mark.
Leaver was the star for the Jaspers stopping 16 attempts from the Gaels. The Gaels defense held Manhattan to just two shots on goal.
The Jaspers are back in action on Saturday, October 11, when they host St. Peter's in a MAAC contest scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The game is also Manhattan's home opener, ending a nine game road trip.
