NIAGARA DOWNS WOMEN'S SOCCER, 1-0

Riverdale, NY (October 26, 2003)- Niagara's Emily Montgomery scored off a corner kick at the 54:13 mark, as the Purple Eagles posted a 1-0 victory over the host Manhattan College Lady Jaspers today at Gaelic Park. Manhattan falls to 5-11-0, 5-2-0 MAAC, while Niagara improves to 8-5-3, 6-0-1 MAAC.

The Lady Jaspers had three good scoring chances, the first of which came at the 15:40 mark, when a free kick hit the crossbar. A little under thirty minutes later, Manhattan was awarded a penalty kick when Lindsay Bernstein was fouled in the penalty area, but Niagara goalkeeper Katy Owings was able to make a diving stop to keep the score at 0-0 going into halftime.

Early in the second half, Manhattan had another good opportunity, but hit the post. The Purple Eagles, who had nine corner kicks to the Lady Jaspers' five, converted on Montgomery's goal when Amber Niece placed the ball into the penalty are on a corner kick.

Owings made five saves to record her third shutout of the season, while Manhattan's Jeanne Marie Gilbert stopped three shots.

Manhattan returns to action on Friday, October 31, when the Lady Jaspers travel to Loudonville, NY to take on Siena in an important MAAC contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
