Riverdale, NY (October 17, 2003)- Manhattan College sophomore
Joseph Pumo put back the rebound of a
Justin Schultz shot with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation to knot the score, as the Jaspers and the Loyola College Greyhounds played to a 2-2 MAAC conference tie today at Gaelic Park. The tie ended a nine-game losing streak to the Greyhounds and improved Manhattan's record to 2-9-1, 1-2-1 MAAC. Loyola's record is now 7-3-3, 4-1-1 MAAC.
The Jaspers took a 1-0 lead at the 39:12 mark when
Robert Tedesco sent a ball into the box, where
Kevin Martin headed the ball on to
Tommy Lenhardt, who put the ball past Loyola goalkeeper Justin Chelland. Despite being outshot 9-1 in the half, Manhattan went into halftime with the 1-0 lead.
The Greyhounds picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, and broke into the scoring column at the 71:26 mark. Off a restart, Danny Wheelan served the ball to Kevin Nash, who headed the ball to Chase Franklin, who put the ball to the back of the net from close range. Loyola scored again just under five minutes later on a similar play. On a corner kick, Wheelan again found the head of a teammate, this time John Alecci, who headed the ball on to Vinnie Piscopo, who beat Manhattan goalkeeper
Collin Leaver.
Loyola continued to pressure the Jasper net, and Leaver made several acrobatic saves to keep the Greyhounds out of the net, and Manhattan used a counter attack to set up Pumo's game-tying tally at the 80:17 mark.
Both teams had chances in the overtime, but both goalkeepers kept the ball out of the net. Leaver finished with 12 saves on the day, while Chelland stopped three shots.
Manhattan is back in action on Sunday, October 19, when the Jaspers host MAAC foe Rider at 10:00 a.m. at Gaelic Park.
