WOMEN'S SOCCER IMPROVES MAAC RECORD TO 3-0 WITH 1-0 WIN AT ST. PETER'S

Jersey City, NJ (October 11, 2003)--Senior Lindsay Bernstein (Stormville, NY) scored an unassisted goal in the 59th minute, lifting visiting Manhattan to a 1-0 win over Saint Peter's Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's college soccer match.

Manhattan (3-9 overall) is now 3-0 in the MAAC a third of the way into the conference schedule. Saint Peter's is 1-11-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the MAAC.

The scoreless first half was even, but that fact proved to be telling, as Saint Peter's was unable to capitalize on a strong wind at its back in the first 45 minutes. The Peahens had a slim 5-4 advantage in shots in the first half, but Manhattan keeper Jeanne Marie Gilbert (East Northport, NY) needed to make just one save in the half.

When the teams changed sides at the half, the wind was at Manhattan's back and the Lady Jaspers just missed scoring quickly, as a shot clanged off the goalpost in the opening moments of the second half.

Bernstein broke the ice when she controlled the ball from about 30 yards out, dribbled down the middle for a few strides and scored on a straight-on shot along the ground from about 15 yards away.

The attacking area opened up for Manhattan after that, aided by the wind and the fact that Saint Peter's had to put more people into the offensive end in attempt to equalize the score. Bernstein's goal was the only score of match, but Manhattan had a 19-7 shot advantage in the second half, for a 23-12 margin in the match.

Gilbert made 3 saves in posting the shutout for Manhattan. Saint Peter's used two goalkeepers. Sophomore Angelina Albruzzese (Parsippany, NJ) made 2 saves in the opening half. Freshman Andrea Kovalcik (Clifton, NJ) played the final 45 minutes, allowing one goal and stopping 14 shots.

Manhattan gets back in action on Friday, October 17, when the Lady Jaspers travel to MAAC rival Loyola in a match scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
